SEVERE

Design severely for the scratch player

It is important that courses challenge all abilities including the scratch player. The trick is to do that in a way whereby the course remains eminently playable and enjoyable for those who are not quite as talented. An obvious way to do this is to create complexities for better players that lesser players can circumvent albeit at the likely cost of extra strokes.

At IVGD, we build courses that challenge better players by deploying asymmetrical green defences, strategically bunkering wide fairways and ensuring that lots of closely mown areas surround greens. We also ensure that our greens provide for a range of pin positions - some easy, some far harder.

Even the scratch player should be constantly stimulated to improve his game in attempting shots he has hitherto been unable to hit
